Girls Who Code

Since 2018

With the Girls Who Code event, we, as the Koç University Society of Women Engineers Club, have been teaching coding to successful female students selected from the schools around our university. We are usually chosen from schools with students have limited opportunities. For eight weeks, we provide these students as they come to our school on weekends, coding training, lunch and transporting. We give certificates to students who successfully complete the event for their participation. With this event, our main goal is to show the support female students need and to encourage them to science, engineering, technology, and mathematics and give them the privilege of studying at the university.

As the Koç University Society of Women Engineers Club, we organized the Girls Who Code event in cooperation with the ACM Woman Chapter at the event we held on the latest date. Twenty female students from Mustafa Kemal Anatolian High School were hosted at Koç University for 5 weeks between April 7 and May 6, and an introduction to programming in Java was given by Computer Engineering students. Certificates were presented to participating students at the end of the program.

In the new period, we are planning to organize our event on online platforms. Compared to previous years, we plan to give students introduction to programming in Python language, as it is easier to teach and learn. Our event will start in April-May as in previous years and will last 5-6 weeks.
